The story of the Save Our Baths Action Group started back in Late May 2008 when the owner of the oldwarrenpointforum website suddenly realised that nothing was being planned by anyone to celebrate the 100th anniversary of The Baths opening in June. Coming as it did only one year after the big celebrations that marked the 100th anniversary of the opening of the municipal gardens he was quite astonished to find out that some members of the local council had in fact voted against any such celebrations more or less branding it a white elephant.
Arrangements were then made for a few forum members to come down and have a photograph taken outside The Baths to mark the anniversary in some way.
While down at The Baths, members got talking to Ian Cumming (the current leaseholder) who explained the uphill struggle he was having with petty vandalism caused by drunks of all ages and local youths using the building for all sorts of antisocial behavior. This was not helped by the local council's lack of maintenance due to increasing budget constraints, and meant that the building was in danger of falling into disrepair.
The notion of a support group was formed that evening and after a few meetings a committee was formed. Thanks to the generosity of local businesses (namely the Brew Corner, The Forrester's, and the Whistledown) the committee managed to meet once a month to discuss how to move forwards.
And now, one year later they have managed to get a permanent meeting place thanks to the local community partnership, the volunteers have started cleaning and painting, put up CCTV cameras, added some low voltage external lighting to enhance the look and security of the building at night, and are working hard on fund-raising ideas to help pay for the cleaning and painting of the outside walls and eventual refurbishment of the pool itself to allow canoe and Kayaking lessons and other activities in a safe and controlled environment. It is hoped that these facilities will be made available to the public during the summer season.
